2015 Ford Mustang First Look Brawn, Beauty, Breeding Read more: http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/coupes/1312_2015_ford_mustang_first_look/#ixzz2n7I7BUca

There was no shortage of opinions or ideas when it came to creating the 2015 Ford Mustang. The sixth-generation Mustang marks the 50th birthday for the iconic sport coupe, and nearly everyone within the company—and even more outside of it—wanted to share their thoughts with the 500 executives, designers, and engineers tasked with developing it. Suggestions came from everywhere, insiders told Motor Trend. All-wheel-drive models, wagon variants, diesel powertrains, and even a notchback were pitched. Many ideas were scrapped immediately with a polite “Thank you,” while others were considered and sometimes explored by the group known as Team Mustang.

“About the only suggestion we didn’t get was for a front-drive version,” said Dave Pericak, the Mustang’s chief engineer. The final version of the 2015 Ford Mustang is a beautifully sculpted vehicle worthy of the pony perched on its trapezoidal grille. It connects the past to the present and readies the Mustang for the next 50 years with three powertrains, an all-new integral-link independent rear suspension, and loads of driver-friendly features.

A Leaner Look The best way to view any car is from a distance. Stand too close, and you’ll miss its real impact. It’s why Ford uses a secure courtyard to look at different versions of a car. Last June, after working on it for three years, Pericak finally saw the Mustang in the courtyard as it appears now. It gave him goose bumps. From 50 feet, the 2015 Ford Mustang is stunning. It has the presence of a soldier at the ready—muscular, lean, and ready to attack. As you move closer, it remains just as impressive. Designers were inspired by the 1965, 1967, and 1969 Mustangs, but created a modern vehicle. Less evolution, more revolution. “We pulled out all the stops,” said Joel Piaskowski, director of exterior design. “And in the end we were able to lower it and rework the proportions that give it that right stance.” Carrying over such things as the front suspension and floor pan would've saved money on the vehicle design, but would've limited how the vehicle's proportions could look. Changing them gave designers more freedom, but added some cost. But the most common mantra within Team Mustang was “Get it right.” The team did. While the new Mustang keeps the same wheelbase of 107.1 inches, the hood was lowered 1.3, the rear decklid was lowered 2.8, and the roof was lowered 1.5. Designers also widened the car’s track by 1.6 inches. There was also some extremely impressive tooling done on this vehicle, with parts that even 10 years ago could not have been pressed in big numbers, if at all. “It’s a credit to the engineers that they could create the tools to build this car,” said Moray Callum, the head of Ford’s global design. The rear shoulder on the 2015 Ford Mustang harks back to the ’69 fastback and is wide enough to hold a Hungry Man TV dinner level. These broad shoulders provide a base for the best back end on any ponycar—wide, low, and powerful, accented by the signature three-piece sequential taillights. There are other features taken from the past, such as the blackout B-pillars and the angled taillamp closure panel that both dramatically change the car’s appearance. The front end features a deep grille opening that now follows a Fusion-esque trapezoidal shape. The headlamps have three diagonal light stripes that provide a menacing stare when on the road. Another trick designers used in creating the Mustang was to pull details off one at a time and see if they were really needed. “If it still looked like a Mustang, we kept it off,” Piaskowski said. This created a cleaner exterior with fewer wrinkles and creases along the body. But it still looks and feels like a Mustang, whether you’re 50 feet away or sitting in the driver’s seat.

Does the Edge Concept Vehicle Reveal Future Ford Cars?

Ford Social

Unveiled at the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show on Wednesday, November 20, 2013, was the Ford Edge Concept vehicle, which hosted a bevy of automated driving technologies. This included a prototype push-button and remote-operated parking feature. It takes the current Ford active park assist to the next level. It can find a perpendicular parking space using ultrasonic sensors. From inside, the driver pushes a button to activate the system; from outside the vehicle, fully assisted parking aid can be remotely activated, allowing customers to wait until the vehicle has pulled out of a tight parking spot before entering the vehicle.
Ford has also begun a research project related to advanced obstacle avoidance systems. The research-and-development vehicle has been able to issue warnings if it detects slow-moving or stationary obstacles in the same lane ahead. If the driver fails to steer or brake following the warnings, the system would automatically steer and brake the vehicle to avoid a collision.
Another new advancement is adaptive steering, which was born from the company’s electric power-assisted steering system, and controls the relationship between how much the driver turns the wheel and how much the road wheels turn. This means that low-speed steering – such as pulling into or out of a parking space – requires much less turning of the wheel.
Beyond these cool driving enhancements, the Edge Concept sports an athletic, sculpted design, and an EcoBoost® engine with a new high-tech application of active grille shutters that automatically open and close to maintain ideal engine operating temperature and maximize aerodynamic efficiency. There are also air curtains on the lower part of the fascia for even more efficiency. The air curtains and ducting are designed to guide air from the front of the vehicle, out through the front wheelwells and down the vehicle side.
“The Ford Edge Concept is the latest example of a utility vehicle that delivers the attributes global customers value most – design, fuel efficiency, driving dynamics, and customer-focused technology to help the driver feel more confident,” said Joe Hinrichs, Executive Vice President and President of The Americas, Ford Motor Company.

Simple Scale Saves Lives

Walking the aisles at the recent Las Vegas Specialty Equipment Market Association Show, an aftermarket showcase of just about every car and truck product known to man, we found a stunning new product that stopped us in our tracks. The idea is simple and will have pickup truck owners wondering why they didn't think of it themselves.

Called WeighSafe, the product uses a small, hydraulically based tongue-weight scale built right into the stock of a trailer hitch. Based on how much down force (or how little, because too little tongue weight is just as dangerous as too much) is being exerted on the ball mount, the scale will show you how much tongue weight (with a relatively small margin of error) is sitting on the back end of your tow vehicle.
The built-in scale was the brainchild of Kevin McAllister from Lehi, Utah, where, as he tells the story, his wife challenged him to invent something that could save lives. At the time the challenge was issued he happened to be studying some federal statistics on trailering accidents and found that more than 10,000 deaths and almost 350,000 injuries could be directly related to improper or unsafe towing.
The product varies in price and can be configured in many different ways. This was McAllister's first time at SEMA, where his new product won the coveted Best New Tools & Equipment Product award. We're hoping we'll see more towing inventions from him in the future.

Is This Ford F-150 Made of Canned Goods?

You might be wondering if your eyes are deceiving you: Is that really a pickup made out of cans? It is indeed – a Ford F-150 built out of canned goods! Actually, more than 12,000 of them. It was part of a project between Southern Ford Dealers and Ford CANstruction, a nonprofit organization that holds annual design-and-build competitions to construct giant-size structures made entirely out of canned food.

Southern Ford Dealers holds a Driving Hunger Relief Program, and this life-size F-150 was a project to benefit food banks and pantries. Seven canned trucks were built in seven cities: Mobile, AL; Winter Haven, FL; Orlando, FL; Jacksonville, FL, Gainesville, FL; Panama City, FL; and Tallahassee, FL. And the engineers were local schools and youth groups, who built the trucks in only about seven hours!

“This project fit well with our dealer group’s commitment to their communities by bringing people together to work for a good cause,” said Paul Clark, Chairman, Southern Ford Dealers Dealer Principal, Paul Clark Ford, Yulee, Florida. “It was all about people helping people.”
Southern Ford Dealers had enough food items to provide about 50,000 meals for local residents; more than 87,500 canned food items went to local food pantries. “It’s hard for some of us to imagine people waking up hungry in America. That’s why this project seemed important to do,” Paul added. Talk about a “can”-do attitude!

Get a Grip! Why Buy Winter Tires?

Not everyone has to worry about driving in cold weather, but if you do, you should know that a good set of winter tires can make a big difference. According to Sean Phillips, author of “All Season or Snow Tires,”it’s important to understand that winter and all-season tires are different and have distinct characteristics. If you’re on the fence about buying a set of winter tires, keep reading. We’ll help explain why it could be a good investment.
According to AOL Autos, winter tires are constructed differently than all-season tires. The tread pattern on winter tires is designed to help them dig into ice and snow. This gives them better traction in winter weather. But tread patterns aren’t the only difference. Bankrate.com explains that the rubber compounds in all-season tires harden in colder temperatures. This causes them to lose their grip on the road and become less effective. Winter tires, on the other hand, are made of a softer rubber that grips the road better in colder temperatures. With all these benefits, should you leave winter tires on your car all year? AOL Autos says that while you could leave them on, it’s not a good idea. Winter tires wear faster in warm weather because of the softer rubber2. So it’s best to switch back to all-season or summer tires when the weather starts to heat up.
Still not sure if winter tires are right for you? This article from Bankrate.com can help you determine if your car is a candidate for winter tires.
Do you change your tires for the winter season? Tell us in the comments below.

Ford Reveals 400HP Fusion at SEMA

Ford Reveals 400HP Fusion at SEMA
BRIGHTON, Mich. - SEMA has turned out to be a must-follow event for all Ford fans, as the blue oval company has been consistently marveling with an outstanding selection of vehicles. Among the 57 other vehicles on display, Ford has revealed a 400HP Fusion at SEMA 2013.

This 2014 Ford Fusion has been modified with a Full Race Motorsports upgrade, giving the vehicle a 2.0-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine. This engine has been fitted with a BorgWarner turbocharger, a cat-back exhaust and a cold-air intake - all of which combines to let this beauty produce 400HP and 350 lb.-ft. of torque. This is a huge jump from the current 240HP and 270lb.-ft. of torque that the standard 2014 Ford Fusion produces.

Although the EcoBoost and modifications already give the vehicle quite the punch, designers didn't stop there. To allow this modified Ford Fusion to perform even better, the vehicle has been given a lowered suspension, upsized brakes, and 21-inch wheels. To keep you entertained inside the car, the Full Race Motorsports performance company has installed custom leather seats by Katzkin, an in-dash seven-inch Android touchscreen tablet, and more.
